Background

Why are most websites mediocre?

Most companies' websites are just plain underwhelming. Uninspiring and, above all, devoid of the actual character and vitality present in the actual businesses. A primary reason is that the people building these websites are not strategists. When they get an assignment, they set out to create a site with the copy and photography with which they've been provided. In doing so, the disaster has already been set in motion. They'll plug everything into a template, happily mashing together the paragraphs that their clients have grudgingly typed up and the images that were on hand, until there appears to be enough content to fill the six pages that someone arbitrarily thought to be the appropriate number. The result is a website that no one is particularly proud of, and more importantly that forgoes a huge opportunity: To seduce visitors with a taste of what they'd be getting were they to actually experience the product in real life.

How does a Penguin site differ?

Penguin Perspective's advantage is that by no means are we strictly a web design company. We're a strategy firm—with outstanding design capabilities. As such, websites are but one tool that we employ to help our clients advance their ideas. We start upstream—working with you to articulate your value proposition in a way that does your organization justice. When we craft your website, we consider each and every ingredient. Scrutinize every pixel. And most importantly, put ourselves in the shoes of your audience. The result: A web presence that's 'living and breathing', and that makes visitors instantly feel as though they've found exactly who they've been looking for. Their search has ended—they are home.

Our sustainability message is more powerful when we steer clear of overused terminology — like ‘green’, and… ‘sustainability’.

We will lead with a statement that drives home our point of differentiation — but then we will also tick all the boxes.

In most fields, most people are looking for the company that has made things a pleasure — the Uber or Airbnb

Our most powerful performance metric will always be the extent to which we can make our competitors say “Fuck!”.

Even Squarespace will fail you.

Why does a world-class website matter?

Your site is a portal to the world.

When a prospect meets you in person, they get a complete understanding of who you are and what it would be like working with you.

But when a prospect meets you only through your website, they get a tiny fraction of that picture — the equivalent of looking through a straw.

That’s with an average site.

A world-class site, like the one we’re making, will effectively widen the aperture to give prospects a true look at what makes you a pleasure to work with.

Everyone loves a winner.

As humans, every purchase decision we make involves an incentive to select a winning brand — one that will make us look good for having chosen it. Sometimes the purchase is so incidental that there is no deliberation; other times the stakes warrant sustained scrutiny. But in any field, more often than not, there are only a handful of winners and it’s clear who they are.

The principle not only holds true but is heightened in the context of the purchase decision faced by our prospects in choosing a solar developer — thanks to their unfamiliarity with the product, the scale of investment, and the volatility of the sector. That’s why it’s critical that every element of our website be meticulously crafted to make it abundantly clear that we are that winner.

The medium is the message.

This now-iconic statement by Marshall McLuhan, perhaps Canada’s most renowned philosopher, speaks to the idea that just as important as what is said is how it is said.

And it’s hugely instructive in the context of how companies present themselves to the world, because the how is often an afterthought.
